Everything You Need To Know About Extensions At Hessions

I want to give you all a little in depth update, along with some relevant information, regarding my current hair extensions. This month, November, will mark 5 months since I’ve had them applied and they’re still looking and feeling great!

At the moment I’m wearing Great Lengths and despite wearing easilocks for an 8 week period earlier this year, this is my third time to have Great Length extensions. However, it was my first time to have them applied at Hession Hairdressing.

Hessions is an award-winning salon with over 40 years industry experience based in two locations in North Dublin, Clontarf and Drumcondra.

I’m fortunate enough to know many great hairdressers, my best friend Emma being one of them, but Karen (my current hairdresser in Hessions) has done my hair on and off over the years and she’s someone I ALWAYS go back to.

Karen began specialising in hair extensions over ten years ago in one of first and only luxury hair extension providers in Dublin City Centre before moving to a salon in Malahide (my hometown) where I followed her and now, she’s based in the flagship Hessions salon in Drumcondra where I’m a regular visiter.

It’s completely normal to move salon, switch up your hair stylist and try something or somewhere new for a change! Sometimes life happens and your current hairdresser mightn’t be around due to sickness or maternity etc. Take these situations as opportunities to try something or somewhere new!

I’m going to give you a couple of reasons why at the moment, Great Lengths are my hair extensions of choice. As much as I loved easilocks in terms of the quality and appearance of the hair, I did notice a huge difference sleeping on them compared to Great Lengths.

I’m a wimp as it is, I mean even brushing knots out of my hair can cause tears to shed. As a result of being super sensitive, I really felt the easilocks ‘connections’ at night when I was lying down. Now, to someone who’s never had Great Lengths before, you probably think I’m crazy because the easilock connections are the smallest of the microbead/microring family, but compared to Great Lengths bonds they were like bricks!

fullsizerender-3

The Great Lengths bonds are virtually invisible upon initial application, are weightless and are extremely comfortable to sleep on – you can barely feel them at all when you’re lying down! With Great Lengths you can also customise the size of the bond, halving them for really fine areas!

img_6424

Also, in my own personal opinion, Great Lengths last a lot longer than microbead/ microring systems so that’s always a bonus when you’re paying a lot of money for hair extensions.

img_6435

Another thing I want to discuss, the price! Many people have this false illusion that Great Lengths extensions are priced through the roof but you’ll no longer think so once I explain the concept to you! Basically YOU decide how expensive you want them to be!

fullsizerender-6

Great Lengths hair comes in various lengths for example they start at 20cm and continue in lengths 30cm, 35cm, 40cm, 45cm, 50cm etc etc etc so the longer you go, the more expensive the hair will be. Also, how thick you want to go will also effect the price for example, you may only want/need 100 strands whereas someone else may want/need 200 strands and it all adds up in different ways.

img_6428

That’s why when you see bloggers promoting hair extensions they usually say, “go for a free consultation at the salon”. It’s not to pawn you off or to trick you into spending money you don’t have, genuinely meeting with a stylist for a consultation will determine what your own personal price will be.

There are lots of women who wear extensions and you wouldn’t even know it! For example, if you have thinning sides you can have a few extensions the same length as your own hair applied just to thicken it up and it won’t cost you an arm and a leg, it’s literally a few strands either side and it makes all the difference to the appearance of your hair!

Great Lengths extensions are customisable and that’s the great thing about them!

Also, while you have your extensions in, you’ll also save money on colouring because the only part of your head accessible for colour during this time is your T-bar!

Karen has been colouring my hair with a revolutionary new product Hessions are now using on all clients called L’Oréal SmartBond. In a nutshell, SmartBond is an ingredient that is added to your colour and conditions your hair while the colour lifts minimising any potential damage. It’s a 3 step system and I’ll explain each step in depth for you.

SmartBond Step 1 contains maleic acid which works intelligently during the chemical process, it limits the oxidative stress, preserves the strong bonds & captures the ions allowing the reconstruction of weaker bonds.

SmartBond Step 2 is applied to the hair once the colour or lightener is removed as a pre – shampoo. It also contains maleic acid which continues to capture the ions allowing weaker bonds to reform. It contains a blend of ceramides & polymers which work to condition hair and add shine.

SmartBond Step 3 is an at-home treatment that continues to strengthen the hair fibre, encouraging the reconstruction of weaker bonds. Use once a week for 1-3 minutes.

I’ve been having lots of fun playing around with colour over the last few months too – we’ve been using wash-in/wash-out pink toners!

img_6431

I was afraid at first thinking the colour wouldn’t completely wash out of my extensions but thankfully it washed out completely after about 5-6 washes giving me the confidence to play around with it some more and try new things.

While I go to Karen for my colour and extensions, I tend to book in with Anna if I’m looking for hollywood waves or something more creative! Anna has a wonderful imagination when it comes to hair and she has the ability to make her visions and ideas come to life.

Look what Anna created for me when I went to Electric Picnic:

Top tips for taking care of Great Lengths extensions:

  1. Use good shampoo & conditioner!

This probably one of the most important things about keeping your extensions in good shape and ensuring longevity! I use and swear by KEVIN.MURPHY haircare! KEVIN.MURPHY is an australian brand accurately dubbed ‘skincare for your hair’. All KEVIN.MURPHY hair products are sulphate free, paraben free and cruelty free meaning they’re super safe to use on extensions!

Aside from being good for your hair, KEVIN.MURPHY products are also good for the environment! When sourcing ingredients, KEVIN.MURPHY looked for companies that use micro cultivation, organic growing practices or ecologically sound wild harvesting techniques to ensure the product range is of the very highest natural quality.

Vitamins and amino acids repair the outer surface of the hair, thickening the hair and reducing the formation of split ends. Moisturisers from Mango butter and Murumuru butter smooth the cuticles and soften the hair.

Extracts from Peruvian Bark, Baobab, Bamboo and Orange Blossom infuse the hair with weightless moisture. Antioxidants from Kakadu Plum, Orchid, Lotus Flower and Desert Lime reduce breakage and repair chemical damage naturally.

If you were on a budget and KEVIN.MURPHY was a little out of your price range I would recommend Cocoa Brown Kind Shampoo & Conditioner.

cocoa-brown-kind-collection-200ml

The Cocoa Brown Kind Shampoo & Conditioner are specifically formulated for sensitive scalps and skin and are free of parabens, alcohol and formaldehyde ideal for those with sensitive scalp, skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis, coloured hair and hair extensions.

The primary cleansing agent is derived from natural sources, coconut oil and fruit sugars. The combination of three cleansing agents work synergistically to create a deep cleansing effect that is gentle on the hair, scalp and extensions. The level of fragrance used is so minimal that it doesn’t even need to be listed as an ingredient on the tubes!

The travel set is a steal at €7.95 (I bring this with me when I’m holidaying as it’s much more travel friendly than my KEVIN.MURPHY products) and even includes a Kind Shower Gel and Cocoa Brown Tanning Wipes! You can buy it from the McCabes Pharmacy website here: http://bit.ly/2e6Q6g4

2. Brush your extensions multiple times per day!

It’s really important that you give your extensions a good brush multiple times per day and I don’t mean a half-arsed run your fingers through your hair brush, I mean properly getting in at those roots and separating each and every strand.

If you’re a wimp like me, may I suggest my two favourite hair brushes both bought from McCabes Pharmacy.

The Denman Tangle Tamer is priced at €6.99 and can be bought online here: http://bit.ly/2fmGCJx. I find this one great for getting in at the roots but for a quicker, all-over detangle I like to use this:

The Denman Tangle Tamer Ultra is priced at €17.99 and can be bought online here: http://bit.ly/2ejuAjc.

Tangle Teasers are also great if you have one of them:

It’s priced at €13 and can be bought online here: http://bit.ly/2fJqc2g

3. Separate the bonds to prevent matting!

Extensions can matt and most often than not, do in some form or other but, it is preventable. The best way to prevent matting is to separate the bonds with your finger tips and if you feel that a couple of strands are ‘stuck’ together, you just have to pull them apart. This little routine can be done daily when you’re sitting down watching the soaps in the evening, it’s as simple as that!

4. Tie your hair back while you’re sleeping.

I either tie my hair in a pony at the nape of my neck or I plait it! Tie it in a tight pony because if it’s loose, you may as well not have it tied back at all. Tying your hair back prevents your hair from becoming matted during the night, especially if you’re like me and you toss and turn all night!

5. Have an experienced hair extensionist apply them!

Karen is a hair extension specialist with over 10 years experience and that’s the kind of quality you’re getting when you go to a salon like Hessions. Would you rather pay €250 and go to an extensionist with little or no experience or would you rather pay the extra few bob and go to someone who has a wealth of knowledge and years of experience under their belt. Think about it, it’s your hair… you wear it every single day. It’s more important than any item of clothing you could justify the spend on. It certainly makes all the difference in terms of the kind of job you end up with, how well they look and how long they last overall.

6. Do not attempt to remove them at home!

You will cause the least possible damage to your own natural hair if you follow the above 4 steps along with having them removed professionally when the time comes. The Great Lengths removal solution dissolves the bond allowing it to slide out of your hair with ease, a solution that cannot be replicated and sold externally!
