Review: Opel MOKKA X Elite 1.6CDTi

As some of you know I was involved in a car accident a few weeks ago and as a result, my car was a complete write off. Given the circumstances of the accident and due to the negligence of another road user, I couldn’t claim off my insurance as my vehicle was the only vehicle involved.

Long story short I was driving along the motorway in the fast lane (far right lane) and I noticed the vehicle to the left of me began to merge into my lane, obviously without checking his blind spot. To avoid a collision I swerved out of the way but as a result lost all control of my car and proceeded to spin 360 degrees across 3 lanes to the far left of the motorway where I eventually crashed into barriers coming to a halt.

In hindsight I should have let the other driver collide with my car but who knows what the outcome of that would have been. All I know is I’m extremely lucky to be alive and no one else was involved or injured. Having said all that it is extremely frustrating being without a car especially because my line of work depends so heavily on the use of one – I’m constantly on the road for work, events & meetings.

I’m very privileged to be in a position to be able to borrow cars and review them on my  blog so don’t be surprised if you see me promoting same across my platforms over the next couple of months. Before I make a large investment on a new vehicle, I want to see what’s out there and what’s best suited to my needs.

Opel Ireland were more than happy to lend me one of their all new MOKKA X Elite 1.6CDTi’s for a week and I absolutely fell IN LOVE with it!

It has all the functionalities of an SUV but it’s really compact and SO easy to manipulate into parking spaces.

One of the amazing features of the MOKKA X is Opel OnStar. What’s OnStar I hear you ask?

Automatic Crash Response

In the event of a crash, built-in vehicle sensors automatically alert an OnStar advisor who is immediately connected to your car. The advisor will assess the situation and if needed will notify emergency services ands provide them with your exact GPS location.

WiFi Hotspot

The extra powerful OnStar roof antenna gives you a stable and quick internet connection and creates a WiFi hotspot for up to seven devices!

Smartphone App

At the touch of a button you can remotely lock/unlock your doors, check your oil, or sound the horn and flash the lights.

Stolen Vehicle Assistance

If someone steals your car report it to the Garda and call OnStar advisors with the reference number you’re given. The OnStar advisor will then provide the Garda with the location and prevent your car from being restarted so it can be recovered!

Vehicle Diagnostics

Whenever you want you can ask OnStar to remotely check some of the key systems of your car like engine, transmission, emissions or airbags.

Destination Download

Searching for directions to a location, restaurant, service station or hotel? Just press the service button and OnStar advisors will provide you with an address and download the location to your navigation system.

You can also press and hold the privacy button for approximately five seconds to mask your cars’s location at any time. If you change your mind, press the privacy button again for approximately five seconds to reveal your location. Only in emergencies can OnStar override this.

The unique thing about the ADAM is the exterior and interior are totally customisable in terms of finishes and colour. It’s literally like a Pick n Mix for cars.

Base model prices start from €15,795.

I think the ADAM is THE perfect car for first time buyers, whereas the MOKKA X is perfect for anyone who’s needs have changed a little.

For example I only needed to start driving outside of Dublin in the last few months with work and personally I got more bang for my buck in the MOKKA X as it’s a diesel engine compared to the ADAM which is a 1.4 turbo petrol.

The MOKKA X is also a great car for someone who’s a little older who may have just become a new mum and needs extra space for the baby.

The ADAM is the perfect ‘single in the city’ car – ideal for personal use, whipping in and out of the city whereas the MOKKA X is perfect for longer driving and extra space.

If I had to buy one over the other it would hands down be the MOKKA X! Had you of asked me a few years ago I perhaps would have said the ADAM.

Both are great cars but I really love the MOKKA X, after having it for an entire week it was a real struggle handing it back to Opel HQ.
