Tattoo Removal: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

As many of you now know I’ve been undergoing tattoo removal at Dundrum Cosmetic Clinic.

To give you a bit of background on the tattoo I’m currently having removed, I got the words ‘What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Stronger’ tattooed down the right side of my body after a breakup when I was 22.

I CRINGE when people ask me what it says because when I say the words out loud I literally hear Kelly Clarkson’s song ‘What Doesn’t Kill You’ blaring in the background. And no, I didn’t get the tattoo because I love the song so much… unfortunately.

I’m going to be real with you in terms of the treatment.. the removal process is EXCRUCIATING! It’s a trillion times worse than actually getting the tattoo!

To give you an idea of how painful it actually is, the treatment itself takes about 60 seconds in total but during those 60 seconds I have to physically stop Brian (the technician) about 4 or 5 times – I can only bear the pain for about 10-15 seconds at a time. Yep, it’s THAT BAD!

However, the pain I endure doesn’t make me want to give up.  I mean, you either want your tattoo removed or you don’t so I think if you want a tattoo removed that badly, you’ll suck it up and endure the pain.

What’s unique about Dundrum Cosmetic Clinic is that they are the  first clinic in Ireland to offer PicoSure Laser tattoo removal which basically cuts traditional tattoo removal time in half.

PicoSure is the world’s first picosecond laser and the only advanced tattoo removal laser with PressureWave technology, which works with your body to remove unwanted ink. PicoSure delivers laser energy that specifically targets tattoo ink, resulting in the successful shattering of just the ink particles without harming the surrounding tissue.

PicoSure works effectively on:

  • Multicolored tattoos, including blues and greens
  • Hard-to-remove black ink
  • Stubborn, previously treated tattoos

During treatment PressureWave technology is used to deliver ultra-short pulses of specialised energy to targeted ink particles. These pulses are so rapid they cause a change in pressure that breaks ink apart into tiny dust-like particles. These tiny particles are then absorbed by the lymphatic system, a critical part of your body’s immune system and eliminated naturally.

PressureWave is the secret behind tattoo treatments with the PicoSure laser. By delivering the ideal energy to the skin, PicoSure efficiently shatters tattoo ink and allows your body to remove it naturally.

After treatment the area blisters up and these blisters naturally burst after a few days. The area then becomes flaky and peels away and my skin is restored to normal about 1 – 2 weeks after treatment.

I know it’s disgusting to look at but I have to show you. This is the reality of tattoo removal. I shared images like this previously across my platforms and the comments made me feel so bad I had to remove them.

People commented saying the result wasn’t normal, that it looked as though I had 3rd degree burns and that I needed to go to A&E as soon as possible. I spoke to Brian who carries out my treatment at Dundrum Cosmetic Clinic and aired my concerns but Brian assured me that the blistering is a normal reaction and effects every 1 in 3 people.

Pain is also measured differently with regards tattoo size and location on the body. For example one of the more painful areas of tattoo removal is around the rib cage which explains why I find treatment so painful.

In terms of how many sessions you would need, each case is different as again it depends on tattoo size, colour of ink, age of tattoo etc.

Prices vary according to the size, colour and complexity of the tattoo to be removed, as well as by the technology you choose. Removal using PicoSure costs more but as I said, it cuts removal time in half compared to the Q-Switch treatment.

The picture on the left is what my tattoo looked like before I started the removal process and the picture on the right was taken right before my last treatment.

This however is what my tattoo looks like today so as you can see there is a huge difference compared to the above image on the right which was how it looked right before my last treatment. I’m most definitely on the home stretch now.

In comparison to when I first started treatment the results speak for themselves.

I’m only half way through my treatment now and the results are already very impressive! As you can see compared to my ‘before’ picture the colour has faded dramatically from jet black to blue and parts of the words have already completely dispersed.

If you are interested in having a tattoo removed you’ll be able to get 10% off every removal treatment by using my discount code PEACHES10. You can quote this discount code when you call 01 2166778  to book your appointment.

I will of course continue to share my journey with you and best believe I’m really looking forward to sharing the final result.

Don’t underestimate the time it takes to fully remove a tattoo either, I go every 3 months for treatment so if you need 8 sessions it will take 2 years for full removal.
